Health experts suggest that we should make seafood (fish and shellfish) the main protein food on our plate twice a week. Eight ounces a week of a variety of seafood should be incorporated into a healthy diet, according to the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Although most Americans meet the guidelines for sufficient consumption of protein, studies unfortunately show that almost 90% of Americans do not meet the recommendation for seafood as a sub-group. Replacing processed or high-fat meats with seafood can help lower intakes of saturated fat and sodium, nutrients that are often consumed in excess of recommended limits.
